In 1891 he was living at age 11 with his parents and siblings at 1, Annie's Cottages, Crescent Road in Leyton, Essex [UK Census 1891].
In 1901 he married Laura Novelle. She was born in 1882 [Birth Index: Hackney 1b 640, 1882 (June) - indexed as "Novell"]. The marriage certificate [Marriage Index: W. Ham 4a 81, 1901 (March)] states that they married at All Saints Church in Leyton Parish on February 24th 1901. He is described as a bachelor aged 21 occupied as a boot-maker (as was his father), and she as a spinster aged 18 whose father Alfred Novelle was a stone sawyer. Both gave their place of residence as 4, Leyton Green Road. The witnesses were John George Davis and Walter Sharpe, whose connections are unknown.
The 1901 Census finds them living at 4, St. Helier's Terrace, Leyton Green Road in Leyton. Walter was occupied as a builder's carman.
Their first child was probably a daughter Laura (1), born in 1901 [Birth Index: W. Ham 4a 394, 1901 (Sept)] who died in infancy [Death Index: W. Ham 4a 227, 1901 (Sept)].

Walter subsequently took up a new partner Emma Undrill. They produced several children before marrying, but they eventually did marry [Marriage Index: W. Ham 4a 848, 1914 (Sept)] and then produced several more children. It is not known why they delayed getting married, but one possibility is that Emma was not initially free to do so.
In 1905 when his daughter May Florence Ellen was born, Walter was living at 8, Downsell Road, Cann Hall in Leyton and was occupied as a general labourer.
In 1908 when his son Leonard Frank was born, Walter was living at 79, Albert Road in Leyton and was occupied as a coal carman.
In 1911 when his daughter Jessamine Lilian was born, he was living at 203, Shernhall Street in Walthamstow and was occupied as a coal porter.

He died around early 1941 [Death Index: Essex S.W. 4a 485, 1941 (March)]. His widow Emma appears to have died aged 77 around early 1961 [Death Index: Essex S.W. 5a 281, 1961 (March)].
