Susannah May Woodhurst was born in 1891 to parents Richard William (3) Woodhurst and his second wife Jane Ann (nee Stanford) Wright. Her birth certificate [Birth Index: Hackney 1b 569, 1891 (March)] states that she was born on January 15th 1891 at her parents' address 8, Clarkes (sic) Terrace, Glyn Road in Lower Clapton. Her father, occupied as a laundryman, was the informant.
The 1891 Census finds her at age 3 months living at that same address with her parents.
She was admitted to the Morning Lane School in Hackney on July 1st 1898, the register giving her date of birth (incorrectly) as January 1st 1891 and her address as 56, Chatham Place in Hackney; her guardian is named simply as "George", for which no explanation is currently available [LMA: LCC/EO/DIV04/MOR/AD/005].
The 1901 Census finds her at age 10 living with her parents at 56, Chatham Place.
The 1911 Census finds her still with her parents and working as a laundress.
She married her cousin James Richard Abbott in 1920 [Marriage Index: Hackney 1b 925, 1920 (Dec)]. His mother was Jane's sister Rachel (nee Stanford). After raising her children she worked in a laundry.
The National Register for England and Wales 1939 finds Susannah and James living at 169, Whiston Road in Haggerston where he was occupied as a saw grinder; his birthdate is given as November 26th 1894. Also at the same address was James' widowed mother Rachel, together with Rachel's daughters of whom one was also named Rachel and the other Jane Lilian.
The Electoral Register for 1957 finds Susannah and James living at 23, Theydon Road (Upper Clapton).
In that same year James died aged "62" [Death Index: Hackney 5c 583, 1957 (Sept)].
The Electoral Register for 1963 finds Susannah living alone at 23, Theydon Road. A relative reports that Susannah later lived in Hertford Road (Hackney).
Susannah died aged "98" in 1989 [Death Index: Barnet 11 291, 1989 (Feb) - DoB 15JA1891, named as "Susan May Abbott"].
James E. Abbott married and produced three children - Susan (now deceased), Steven and another boy with name unknown [relative's report].
Lilian M. Abbott died aged 2 around early 1929 [Death Index: Shoreditch 1c 127, 1929 (March)].
