This page draws mostly upon material from documents supplied by Mr. John Bathurst of Quebec from his Collection of Genealogical, Biographical and Historical Records of the Family of Bathurst, and appears here by his kind permission. The John Bathurst Collection [JBC] assigns to each individual Bathurst a unique four-digit reference number prefixed by a #.
Sarah (2) Bathurst [JBC: #4992] was baptized at St. Matthew, Bethnal Green on December 9th 1827 of parents Robert (2) Bathurst and his first wife Sarah (nee Platt).
The 1841 Census finds her at age 13 living with her father and step-mother at 10, Bacon Street in Bethnal Green.
The 1851 Census finds her at age 23 living with her widowed grandmother Sarah (nee Hitchins) at 8, Sidney Place in Bethnal Green, occupied as a domestic. The same census finds her future husband Edmund John Hardcastle aged "43", widowed and living with three children at 1, Gloucester Street in Shoreditch where he was occupied as a dyer. He was born on May 8th 1817 and baptized at St. Leonard, Shoreditch on September 25th 1817 [IGI: Batch C040803], this record omitting his second forename.
In 1856 she witnessed the fourth marriage of her father.
In 1859 she witnessed the marriage of her half-sister Delia Diana.
On April 17th 1862 she married Edmund John Hardcastle at West Hackney Parish Church [Marriage Index: Hackney 1b 508, 1862 (June)]. His father John Hardcastle is described as a dyer and hers as a willow manufacturer. The witnesses were Edmund John's brother Thomas Hardcastle and Harriet Broom, whose connection is unknown.
The 1871 Census finds them with six children living at 33, Hornsey Road in St. Mary, Islington. Mistakenly, all have Islington cited as their birthplace. Edmund John was still occupied as a dyer.
The 1881 Census finds them with three children living at 13, Henrietta Street in St. George, Bloomsbury where Edmund John was occupied as a bleacher.
The 1891 Census finds them living with the family of their married son Frederick George at 103, Tufnell Park Road in Islington where Edmund John was described as a retired dyer. Also present were his unmarried daughters Florence Emmeline and Eliza Hannah.
The 1901 Census finds them living by themselves at 20, Dunmollie Road in St. Pancras where both were described as living on their own means.
Edmund John died aged "86" in 1903 [Death Index: Islington 1b 101, 1903 (June)], and Sarah (2) died aged "96" in 1923 [Death Index: Edmonton 3a 517, 1923 (Dec)].
