Rosanna Elizabeth Woodhurst was born in 1845 to parents James (2) Woodhurst and his wife Mary Ann Bonner, and was almost certainly their second child. Her birth certificate [Birth Index: Stepney II 499, 1845 (Dec)] states that she was born at her parents' residence at 1, Jamaica Street in Stepney on October 4th 1845. Her father was occupied then as a police constable.
She died in 1847. Her death certificate [Death Index: Stepney 2 359, 1847 (June)] states that she died on April 8th 1847 at her parent's address which was then 2, Red Lion Street in Wapping. Her age is cited as 18 months and the cause of death as 'water on the brain'. In modern terminology this is the condition known as encephalus, an accumulation of cerebro-spinal fluid around the brain causing - if unchecked - dramatic swelling of the skull and fatal brain damage. Her mother, 'present at the death', was the informant. James (2) is cited as being a police constable.
