The origins of Richard Woodward are currently unknown. He married Elizabeth Greggs, by Banns, at St. Mary Bredman, Canterbury in Kent on July 20th 1769 [Parish Register Marriages 1754-1800, CCA: Film U3/2/1/4]. He was described as being of the parish of Holy Cross, Westgate and she of the parish of St. Andrew, both in the neighbourhood of Canterbury. The witnesses were Samuel Baker and John Adman, whose connections are unknown.
He produced by Elizabeth at least three children named John, Sarah and William, all baptized in Canterbury.

Sarah Woodward was christened at St. Alphage, Canterbury on November 11th 1770 [IGI: Batch P015201: Parish Register, KFHS Fiche Index]. Nothing more is known of her.
William Woodward was christened at St. Dunstan, Canterbury on June 10th 1792 [IGI: Batch P015151: Parish Register Baptisms 1743-1812, CCA: Film U3/141/1/4]. He may have been the person of that name who was married, by Banns, to Mary White at St. Margaret, Canterbury on October 17th 1812 [Parish Register Marriages 1754-1821, CCA: Film U3/6/1/2]. The witnesses were Sarah Back and Edward Burgess, whose connections are unknown.
