Myrtle S. Woodhurst was born in 1889 to parents Robert Cook Woodhurst and his wife Ann Eliza Jane (nee) Slaughter.
Descendants report that she was born on September 24th 1889 at Monroe City in Monroe Co., Missouri. In adult life she was known familiarly as "Aunt Sis" or as "Eva" (a name she adopted for herself, perhaps disliking her given name).
The US 1900 Census finds her at age "10" living with her parents in Salt River township, Ralls Co. in Missouri and gives her birthdate as September 1889.
She first married on December 27th 1908 at Perry, Ralls Co. to Elbert Brinker Hicklin; the marriage license states that Elbert was aged under 18 and that his father had assented in writing to the marriage.
In 1909 they produced a son Alvin, known familiarly as "Alva" or "Alvie".
The US 1910 Census finds them and their son living in Jasper township, Ralls. Co. where Elbert was occupied as a farmer.
By 1917 they had evidently separated, because on March 18th 1917 Elbert remarried at Perry, Ralls Co. to Lena (nee) Krigbaum. The marriage license (and one or two other sources) assigns to her a middle initial "L" but more generally she went by the forenames Lena Mae.
The US 1920 Census finds Elbert and Lena, together with Alvin and a further son Harold of their own, living in East Loutre township, Audrain Co. in Missouri where Elbert was working as a garage mechanic. Myrtle has not been found in this census.
On April 18th 1924 Myrtle remarried at Coquille township in Coos Co., Oregon as "Eva Hickland" to Bruce Earl Henry. The Marriage Return gives his age as "23 and 7 months" and hers as "25 and 6 months". It states that he was occupied as a logger and born in Oregon to parents both born in North Carolina, and further states that she was born in Missouri, her father in Indiana and her mother in Missouri. It is also states, falsely, that this was her first marriage. Both he and she were residing in Sumner township, Coos Co.
The 1930 Census finds her living with Bruce at 5709, Sacramento Avenue in Richmond City, Contra Cost Co., California where Bruce was occupied as a carpenter working for an oil company. They had no children with them. Meanwhile Elbert was back in Ralls Co. living in Salt River township with Lena, three children (including Alvin) and Lena's parents; Elbert was farming again.
Newspaper reports show that Myrtle and Bruce divorced in Nevada in June 1932. Bruce remarried on February 27th 1933 at Myrtle Point in Coos Co. to a teacher Lila (nee) Dement.
On August 12th 1939 Myrtle remarried (as "Eva Myrtle Henry") in Santa Cruz, California to a carpenter Anders Victor Anderson, born in Sweden on October 14th 1885. One of the two witnesses to the marriage was Myrtle's sister-in-law Nora Cecel (nee Hatfield), wife of her brother John Virgil Woodhurst. Myrtle had been living in Menlo Park, San Mateo Co. and Anders had been living in Los Altos in Santa Clara Co.
The US 1940 Census finds Myrtle and Anders living at 1050, University Drive in Menlo Park where Anders was working as a carpenter in the building trade.
Anders died in Santa Clara on February 2nd 1962.
Myrtle's son Alvin died at San Leandro in Alameda Co, California on January 30th 1975.
Myrtle died on February 19th 1982 and was buried in Hayward, Alameda Co. on February 22nd. The US Social Security Death Index gives her last place of residence as 94544 Hayward, Alameda.
