Brief biography

Matilda (2) Woodhurst was born in Connecticut around 1843 to parents John (6) Woodhurst and his wife Ann Susan Russell.

The US 1840 Census finds her living with her parents in Connecticut in Windsor township, Hartford County.

The US 1850 Census finds her living with her parents in Oxford township, Butler County in Ohio. The record gives her age as "6" and her birthplace as Connecticut.

The US 1860 Census finds her living with her parents in Wayne township, Butler County aged "16".

An IGI record states that she married James V. Stines in Darke County, Ohio on May 17th 1866 [IGI: Film 1985230].

The US 1870 Census finds her living at age "24" with her husband in Greenville township, Darke County. The record wrongly gives her birthplace as England, but correctly states that her parents were of foreign birth. James, born in Ohio, was aged 33 and occupied as a farm labourer. There were no children with them. Living next to them was the family of James' father William Stines, a wealthy farmer aged 62. William is recorded as farming 120 acres in an index of persons residing in Greenville in 1875 [Darke County Genealogical Researchers website www.dcoweb.org].

The US 1880 Census finds them still in Greenville. James, now a farmer, has his age cited correctly as 43, and hers as "37". Her birthplace is wrongly given as Kentucky and that of her parents as Connecticut, so either her husband or she was still seriously confused as to her origins. Next door to them was her father-in-law William Stines, now retired, with his wife Jane.

The US 1900 Census finds them still in Greenville. James, still a farmer, is stated to have been born in April 1837, and she in October 1843. Here her birthplace is correctly given as Connecticut and that of her parents as England. They had been married for "33" years [actually 34?] and had produced no children. Living with them was James' father William, described as born in New Jersey in 1808 and now retired; William's father was born in Germany and his mother was born in England.

Nothing more is currently known of her.
