Margaret Mangler was born, according to various sources (including unattributed IGI patron submission records), in Jackson Co., Iowa on January 25th 1884 (or, just possibly, 1883) to parents George Friedrich Christian Mengeler and his wife Margarethe Catharine Sophie Marie (nee) Grossman. These sources variously give her birthplace as Green Island or Preston in Jackson Co.. George was reputedly born on November 21st 1830 in Wendelborstel, Hannover in Germany (Prussia), and Margarethe on February 2nd 1842 in Germany. Margaret had seven siblings - Molly, Emma, Henry, William, Sophia, Dora and George.
Some sources indicate that Margaret had a second forename "Sophia".
In 1900 Margaret - known familiarly as "Maggie" - married Franklin ("Frank") Umbaugh. He was reputedly born at Carrollton in Carroll Co., Iowa on July 26th 1877 to parents Elias Lawrence Umbaugh and his wife Melissa (nee) Tuel. A wedding photograph of Frank and Maggie appears on Page 351 of Richard A. Huehn's book The Family of Jacob W. Umbaugh and Elias L. Umbaugh, published on March 2nd 1993. They produced the three children listed below. They subsequently divorced.
Maggie then partnered or remarried to William Roy (1) Woodhurst, possibly around 1915-16. It appears that no children were produced from this partnership.
On October 29th 1919 Franklin remarried, to Margaret Pearl Ellsworth, at Jefferson in Greene Co., Iowa. Margaret Pearl was born on December 20th 1894 at Scranton in Greene County.
A city directory for Clinton, Iowa in 1923 lists Maggie as "Woodhurst Margaret Mrs, 208, Maple Avenue". It appears that she and William Roy (1) were no longer living together.
City directories for Clinton in 1927 and 1929 list Maggie as "Woodhurst Margaret Mrs, 220, 2s Av. N".
She has not yet been located in the US 1930 Census.
There exists one IGI record claiming that in 1930 Maggie married yet again to a Wilbur "Billy" Wells, but no corroborating evidence has been found for this.
Franklin died on February 10th 1940.
Maggie died on July 20th 1952, possibly in Charlotte township in Clinton County. Her death was announced in The Davenport Democrat on July 22nd of that year. The same date of death is confirmed in the records of the USGenWeb Archives Cemetery Transcription Project. Both sources refer to her by her Woodhurst surname, casting doubt on the claim that she had married into the Wells surname. Huehn's book notes correctly that her husband "William Woodhurst" had already died. She was buried at the Springdale Cemetery at Clinton in Clinton Co. Another notice of her funeral was published on July 22nd by the Quad-City Times (Davenport) as follows:
