Mary Ann (4) Woodhurst was born in 1889 to parents William (8) Woodhurst and his wife Mary Ann (nee Downey), being their first child. The birth certificate [Birth Index: St. Saviour 1d 64, 1889 (March)] states that she was born on January 5th 1889 at her parents' address 17, Toulmin Street in the Parish of St. Saviour, Southwark. Her father's occupation was cabinet maker (journeyman) and her mother - who could not sign her name - was the informant. Toulmin Street lies a few hundred yards west of Borough station and connects Great Suffolk Street with Mint Street, in which stood the Southwark Workhouse where Mary Ann (4)'s brother John (8) was born.
Nothing more is known of her. She does not appear among the Woodhurst marriages or deaths in the GRO indexes up to 1940. There is also no GRO death reference to her up to the end of 1892 under any surname variant. She is not cited as being in her parents' household in the 1901 Census, and it seems probable that either she had died in childhood or had been raised by some other family, perhaps since infancy.
