The origins of John Ferris are currently unknown. He married Mary Doe, by Banns, at Wormshill in Kent on November 4th 1765 [Bishop's Transcripts 1603-1812, CCA: Film DCb/BT1/266]. Both partners were described as "of this parish". Wormshill lies about 7 miles west of Eastling, about 6 miles east of Detling and about 6 miles south-west of Sittingbourne.

Mary Ferris was christened at Wormshill on January 3rd 1767, and her brother Thomas was christened there on February 6th 1769 [Bishop's Transcripts 1603-1812, CCA: Film DCb/BT1/266]. She married John (3) Woodhurst at Eastling on September 27th 1791.
