John (8) Woodhurst was born in 1891 to parents William (8) Woodhurst and his wife Mary Ann (nee Downey). His birth certificate [Birth Index: St. Saviour 1d 50, 1891 (March)] states that he was born on January 22nd 1891 at the Workhouse in Mint Street, Southwark. His father's occupation was cabinet maker journeyman and his mother was the informant. The field reserved for the naming of the mother cites her address as 15, William Street in the Borough subdistrict of Southwark, but the field for the informant cites her as being resident at the workhouse. Other sources show that she had been admitted there on November 25th 1890 and was discharged on February 18th 1891, nearly a month after the birth. William Street was presumably where she was living prior to admission. It no longer exists as such but was originally near Borough Road, which in turn lies a little to the south of Mint Street. Neither she nor any other Woodhursts were living there by the time of the 1891 Census taken in early April.
John (8) died at age 14 months on March 21st 1892. The death certificate [Death Index: Lambeth 1d 262, 1892 (March)] states that he died at his parents' address which was then 21, King Street in Lambeth. His father, present at the death, was the informant and was then occupied as a cabinet maker journeyman. The cause of death was certified as measles and broncho-pneumonia. King Street was then near Cornwall Road, just south of today's National Theatre on the South Bank and a little to the east of Waterloo Station. It was later renamed Ethelm Street but no longer exists as such.
