Jessie E. Woodhurst was born in Michigan on October 22nd 1890 to parents Earl George (1) Woodhurst and his wife Nellie Belle (nee) Morse.
The US 1900 Census finds her at age "9" living with her parents in Pennfield township, Calhoun Co. in Michigan.
She first married Elmer Ellsworth Brewer on September 20th 1907. The register of Marriage Returns describes him as a carpenter aged "18" residing in Saginaw and her as aged "17" and residing in Saginaw. His parents were named as William K. [King] Brewer and "Maggie" [Margaret Ann (nee) Rieder].
The register of Divorce Returns from the Circuit Court of Saginaw records that she filed for divorce from Elmer on October 7th 1909 on the grounds of extreme cruelty It gives the year of their marriage incorrectly as 1906 and states that they had produced one child. This child was Paul Elmer Brewer, born in 1908.
The US 1910 Census taken on April 23rd finds Jessie aged "19" living with her mother, step-father, her child Paul and her siblings in N. Granger Street, Saginaw and described as divorced, although it appears that the divorce had not yet been granted. The register of Divorce Returns records a "Final Action" date of February 8th 1910 and notes that the divorce had been granted and made absolute. However, more than two years later, during August and September 1912, repeated notices of summons issued by the District Court of Idaho in Latah Co. were published in The Daily Star of Moscow township requiring Elmer to appear before the court to respond to Jessie's application that "the bonds of matrimony now existing between plaintiff and defendant be dissolved". It is not known how matters then proceeded, except that the final granting of her divorce must have been accomplished within a year of these summonses, as she remarried in October 1913.
She remarried to Hans Halverson on October 6th 1913. The marriage certificate is very sparse in detail, but notes that both parties were residing in Moscow. The license had been granted on the same date. The event was reported in The Star Mirror on October 9th as follows:
At the office of the auditor and recorder marriage licenses were issued to Hans Halverson and Jessie Woodhurst, both of Moscow ...
Hans, a bachelor, had been born on November 3rd 1890 to parents Halver/Halvor Halverson (a Norwegian) and Jacobine (nee) Jensen (a Dane) and baptized on December 21st 1890, as recorded (in Norwegian) in the baptism register of the Genesee Lutheran Church.
Jessie and Hans produced their first child Nellie Nora in Moscow in 1915 but by 1918 they had moved to Spokane in Washington State, where a city directory lists them as residing at E2407 Hartson Avenue and states that Hans was a pickle maker. (In 1910, while still living with his parents, he had been a farm labourer.)
The US 1920 Census finds them living in Fifth Street, Moscow with the children Paul and Nellie. Hans, here assigned a middle initial "L", was working once again as a farm labourer.
The US 1930 Census finds them living in "A" Street in the North Precinct of Moscow with four children. Hans was now occupied as a carpenter in the building trade.
The US 1940 Census finds them living in the East Precinct of Moscow, again with four children. Hans was working as a roofer associated with the paint and hardware industry. Jessie was working as a clerk for a grocery business.
Hans died aged "60" in Moscow on October 16th 1951. The death certificate states that he died at the Willis Grocery on South Main Street and gives the cause as "acute coronary embolis" arising from "valvular heart disease with decompensation". He had also been suffering from "chronic nephritis with albuminaria". He had been residing at 1220 East "F" Street and working as a painter. He was buried on October 19th at the Genesee Valley Cemetery.
On April 2nd 1958 Jessie remarried to a bachelor John Nutterville. The marriage certificate describes him as aged "49" and born in Markerville, Alberta in Canada. She is described as a widow aged "67" and born in Midland, Michigan. Both were residing in Moscow.
John died on January 14th 1972 and was buried at the Moscow Cemetery.
Jessie died on April 29th 1984 and was likewise buried at the Moscow Cemetery.
