Brief biography

The origins of Elisha Hobbs are unknown, but he was probably born in Kent around the 1760s. He married a woman named Sarah whose maiden name is unknown. She was born in Ospringe, Kent around 1762-63.

He had evidently died by 1841. The 1841 Census finds Sarah at (rounded) age "75" living in Love Lane, Milton (-next-Sittingbourne) with her unmarried daughter Jane.

The 1851 Census finds Sarah aged "88" living at the National School in Milton and occupied as a housekeeper. Jane was again with her and occupied as a schoolmistress.

Sarah died in 1856 [Death Index: Milton 2a ..58 (page unclear), 1856 (June)].

The 1841 Census finds her unmarried at age "30" living in Milton with her mother and occupied as a schoolmistress. The 1851 Census finds her unmarried at age "40" still living with her mother and occupied as a National School schoolmistress. In 1856, probably following her mother's death, she married Thomas Troughton [Marriage Index: Milton 2a 861, 1856 (June)]. They married at Milton on May 29th [IGI: Batch I013221], the latter source correctly naming her father. Thomas was born in Liverpool around 1809 and first married a much older woman named Anne who was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire around 1793. The 1851 Census finds them with no children living in the High Street, Milton where Thomas was occupied as a saddler. Anne may have died in 1852 [Death Index: Sevenoaks 2a 208, 1852 (Sept)]. The 1861 Census finds Jane and Thomas living in Milton's National School House where she was still occupied as a schoolmistress and he as a saddler. They were still there in 1871. Thomas died aged "67" in 1876 [Death Index: Milton 2a 433, 1876 (Dec)]. The 1881 and 1891 Censuses find Jane widowed and still occupied as a schoolmistress in Milton. She died aged "84" in 1892 [Death Index: Milton 2a 467, 1892 (Sept)].
