Edward (2) Woodhurst was born to parents George (3) Woodhurst and his wife Clara (nee) Prior. His birth certificate [Birth Index: Bromley 2a 409, 1888 (June)] states that he was born on April 6th 1888 at his parents' address 4, Chancery Lane in Beckenham, Bromley. His mother "Clara Woodhurst formerly Pryor" was the informant and his father "George Woodhurst" is described as a general labourer. The certificate bears an unusual addendum which reads as follows:
In N0167 Cols 4 and 5 for "Woodhurst" read "Woodhurst otherwise Woodhouse" and Col 5 for "Pryor" read "Prior". Corrected on the 25th January 1950 by me C W Knottley Deputy Superintendent Registrar on production of Statutory Declarations made by John Dickenson and Lionel Stanley Wells.
It is not known what motivated the declarations made in 1950. Perhaps their purpose was to establish that Edward (2)'s parents were indeed the George and Clara who had married in 1885 using variant surnames. They may have been dealing with estate matters. The evidence they would have needed to supply in 1950 would have been considered by the Registrar and then returned to them, and is therefore not accessible at the present day. However, it would have been required to show that Edward (2)'s parents had been using both versions of their surnames in 1888.
The 1891 Census finds him at age 3 living with his parents in Grove House, Croydon Road in Beckenham.
The 1901 Census finds him at age 12 living with his parents at "The Dairy", High Street in West Wickham, about three miles south of Beckenham.
Nothing more is currently known of him.
