Elizabeth (1) Woodhurst was born at Fairlight around 1838 [UK Census 1841, US Census 1860] to parents James (1) Woodhurst and Sarah (nee) Broadfoot. Her precise birthdate is believed to be March 9th 1838 [OAB: Page 205], and she was certainly christened there on May 18th 1838 [Fairlight Parish Register]. She was christened again, for reasons unknown, at Pett on July 4th 1841 [Pett Parish Register]. James (1) was described in the latter record as a labourer.
In early childhood she emigrated with her mother and siblings to Abbeville, South Carolina (SC).
On December 28th 1859 she married Stephen Elmore Brooks Norrell. He was born at Greenwood, SC on November 4th 1840 and joined the Abbeville Methodist Church in 1860 [OAB: Page 205]. He was a harness maker [OAB: Page 181]. Some sources spell his first name as Steven. His grandmother's maiden name was Elmore and he was named after a relative Brooks Elmore; he was one of many children born to James M. Norrell (born around 1816) and his wife Mary Elizabeth [descendant's report].
The US 1860 Census finds her living at age 22 with Stephen in Abbeville. Also living there was her unmarried brother George William (1)
Elizabeth (1) joined the Abbeville Methodist Church in 1867, and died in 1880 [OAB: Page 205].
The US 1880 Census finds her husband with many of the children living in Abbeville, together with her widowed mother-in-law. She also is named in the record and ascribed the age of 41, but described as "died since June 1st".
Stephen was still a harness maker when he was included in Hugh Wilson's 'selected list' of citizens published on May 14th 1884 in the local Press and Banner [OAB: Page 185]. In later life he may have served for a while as Editor of the Elberton Star [descendant's report].
Elizabeth (1) and Stephen are buried at the Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Abbeville in graves that are unmarked but whose locations have been documented by their present-day descendants.
