Claude Hamilton (1) Woodhurst was born on July 9th 1910 in Abbeville, SC of parents Andrew Kennedy Woodhurst and his wife Martha Ann Fortescue [descendant's report].
The US 1930 Census [full record not yet extracted] finds him at age "19" living in the household of his married sister Addie Florence in Abbeville where he was occupied as a labourer for the Highway Department.
He subsequently became an automobile mechanic and married Mayzelle Susan Argo at Abbeville. Mayzelle was born at Royston, Georgia on April 13th 1913 of parents Thomas B. Argo and his wife Mary Vanna Fowler; she was of Greek descent, her family having originated from the region of the Western Aegean Sea; her siblings were named Coy, William Argo and Nancy [descendant's report and Abbeville obituary].
Claude Hamilton (1) and Mayzelle produced two sons. However, having suffered in his youth from rheumatic fever, he died aged only 26 on August 24th 1936 [from Bratcher]. Mayzelle, just 23 when she was widowed, toiled alone through the remainder of the Depression period to raise the two young boys.
In later life she remarried to Thomas Jefferson Bell, by whom she had a further son and a daughter Mary; Mary married Dan Sumpter; Mayzelle died on November 21st 1999 and was buried at the Long Cane Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Abbeville, where both her husbands had also been buried [descendant's report and Abbeville obituary].
