This page draws mostly upon material from documents supplied by Mr. John Bathurst of Quebec from his Collection of Genealogical, Biographical and Historical Records of the Family of Bathurst, and appears here by his kind permission. The John Bathurst Collection [JBC] assigns to each individual Bathurst a unique four-digit reference number prefixed by a #.
Angelina Tansley Bathurst [JBC: #4997] was born on June 6th 1829 at Gloucester Street in Bethnal Green to parents Robert (2) Bathurst and his second wife Angelina (2) Tansley. She was baptized at St. Matthew, Bethnal Green on March 28th 1830.
The 1841 Census appears to find her at age "12" as "Angelina Tansley" in the household of her uncle Peter (2) Tansley at 22, St. John Street in Finsbury.
Descendants report that she was an accomplished pianist and played for prospective customers at a music shop in Piccadilly's fashionable Burlington Arcade, where her future husband first saw her performing and was allegedly "smitten" by her. This shop was probably the Burlington Arcade property shown in the 1841 census as occupied by a music seller John Keegan together with a music teacher John S. Holmyard and her aunt Mary Ann Tansley, occupied there as a servant.
On November 20th 1847 she married a tailor Thomas Syrett at St. John, Clerkenwell [Marriage Index: Clerkenwell III 76, 1847 (Dec)]. Her address was then Skinner Street in EC1. Thomas, then of Berkeley Street, W1, was the son of a shoe maker William Syrett. The witnesses were John Brunt, whose connection is unknown, and Caroline Angelina Chapman. The latter was the bride's cousin, namely the daughter of Angelina (2)'s sister Ann (nee Tansley) who had married William Chapman.
Her husband Thomas was Catholic and their children also were, so it is plausible that after marrying she converted from Anglicanism.
The 1851 Census finds them with their first two children living at 5, Highbury Park West in Islington N5. Thomas, born in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk was occupied as a postman.
In 1852 she was a letter carrier and still living at 5, Highbury Park West.
In 1856 she was living at 2, George Street (today's George's Road) in Holloway N7.
The 1861 Census finds them with five children living at 2, Victoria Terrace in St. Mary, Islington. Thomas was then occupied as a Post Office messenger and she as a laundress.
The 1871 Census finds them with four children still living at 2, Victoria Terrace. Thomas was then occupied as a GPO sorter and she as a laundress.
The 1881 Census finds them with just two sons living at 54, Queensland Road in Islington St. Mary. Their occupations were the same as in 1871.
The 1891 Census finds them with their son Joseph Ignatius still living at 54, Queensland Road, with Thomas still occupied as a GPO sorter. At the same address was the household of their son Thomas William - a builder's labourer - with his wife Elizabeth and three children.
Angelina Tansley died aged 70 in late 1899 [Death Index: Islington 1b 306, 1899 (Dec)].
The 1901 Census finds Thomas aged "79" and widowed in the household of his son James Francis at 62, Howard Road in Willesden.
Thomas died aged 83 in 1906 from senile decay and exhaustion. He was described on his death certificate [Death Index: Hendon 3a 177, 1906 (March)] as a post office pensioner of 46, Granville Road, Childs Hill, NW2. The informant, living at the same address, was his son-in-law "George" (John George) Roberts, who had married his daughter Mary Angelina [Marriage Index: Kensington 1a 284, 1880 (Dec)].
