William Henry (2) Stubbs was born in 1837 to parents Reuben (1) Stubbs and his second wife Sarah (nee Wildman) [Birth Index: Swansea 26 342, 1837 (Dec)]. He was christened on November 29th 1837 at St. Mary, Swansea [IGI: Batch C022182].
The 1851 Census finds him at age "13" living at 57, Powis Street, Woolwich as a servant in the household of an unmarried outfitter Joseph Harris and occupied as an errand-boy.
In 1860 he married Frances Jane McAdam [Marriage Index: Greenwich 1d 951, 1860 (June)]. She was born in Ireland around 1837-38.
They have not been found in the 1861 Census and were possibly in Gibraltar where their first child was born.
The 1871 Census finds them living with four children at 3, Railway Street, Gillingham in Kent where William Henry (2) was occupied as a schoolmaster in the Royal Engineers. Also present was Frances' younger brother Gilbert P. McAdam aged "14" and, like her, born in Ireland.
The 1881 Census finds Frances Jane living with her children at 4, Warley Terrace in Great Warley, described as the wife of a "schoolmaster [in] 8 Regiment". The household included her married daughter Elizabeth Wildman (1) and the latter's child John Whinfield aged "3". William Henry (2) was not present and his location is unknown, as also is that of Elizabeth's husband. They may have both been serving abroad in the army.
The 1891 Census finds Frances Jane widowed and living on a Government pension at 13, Railway Street in Monks Coppenhall, Crewe in Cheshire with four of her children. One of these, Francis James (1) was the head of household and was occupied as a Post Office sorting clerk and telegraphist.
Frances Jane died aged "58" in 1896 [Death Index: Nantwich 8a 204, 1896 (June)].
Elizabeth Wildman (1) married John Whinfield in 1878 [Marriage Index: Dover 2a 1370, 1878 (June)]. He was born in Lymm, Cheshire around 1840-41. The 1881 Census finds her with a 3-year-old son staying with her mother and siblings in Great Warley, Essex. The 1891 Census finds her living with John and four children at 23, Bold Street, Altrincham in Cheshire where John was described as an army pensioner and a messenger. He appears to have died aged "57" in 1900 [Death Index: Bucklow 8a 158, 1900 (March)]. The 1901 Census finds Elizabeth widowed and living with four children at 17, Bold Street in Altrincham.
The 1891 Census finds Francis James (1) unmarried and living with his mother and three siblings in Monks Coppenhall, Cheshire. The 1901 Census finds him still unmarried and living with his two unmarried sisters at 154, Walthall Street in Monks Coppenhall where he was again occupied as a sorting clerk and telegraphist.
Phoebe McAdam (1) was born in Malta in 1868 [Army Chaplains Registers of Births/Baptisms 1800-1900 : Malta : 8th Regiment]. The 1891 Census finds her unmarried and living in a household headed by Thomas W. Meakin(s) in Park Road, Melsland in Hale, Cheshire where she was occupied as a housemaid. The 1901 Census finds her still unmarried and living with her brother Francis James (1) in Monks Coppenhall where she was occupied as a housekeeper.
Agnes Silphine Compton (1) was born in Malta on February 21st 1870 [Army Chaplains Registers of Births/Baptisms 1800-1900 : Malta : 8th Regiment] The latter source describes her father as an "Army Schoolmaster". The 1891 Census finds her unmarried and living with her mother and three siblings in Monks Coppenhall, Cheshire where she was occupied as an assistant draper. Later in 1891 she married Charles Vernon Sibley [Marriage Index: Chester 8a 695, 1898 (Dec)]. He was born on the Isle of Wight around 1854-55. The 1901 Census finds them with no children living at 29, Woodstock Street in Oldham, Lancashire where Charles was occupied as a fire insurance agent.
An unattributed IGI patron submission record claims that Beatrice Jane (1) was born on May 25th 1874 at St. "Michal" in Ireland, but mistakenly gives her middle name as "Anne". The 1891 Census finds her unmarried and living with her mother and three siblings in Monks Coppenhall, Cheshire where she was occupied as an apprentice draper. The 1901 Census finds her still unmarried and living with her brother Francis James (1) in Monks Coppenhall where she was occupied as a book-keeper and cashier for a clothing factory.
The 1891 Census finds Christopher Henry (1) unmarried and living with his mother and three siblings in Monks Coppenhall, Cheshire where he was occupied as a Post Office telegraph clerk. The 1901 Census finds him still unmarried and lodging in the household of a widow Emma Jones at 67 & 68, High Street, St. Leonard in Bridgnorth, Shropshire where he was occupied again as a Post Office clerk.
