James Armitage (1) Stubbs was born on November 4th 1848 in Runcorn, Cheshire to parents Edmund Horatio (1) Stubbs and his wife Mary Ann (nee Empson) [Birth Index: Runcorn 19 209, 1848 (Dec)]. No christening record has yet been found for him.
The 1851 Census finds him living with his parents in Sherwood Street, Radford in Nottingham. His entered age is unclear.
The 1861 Census finds him aged "11" living with his parents at 94, Commission Street in Great Bolton, Lancashire.
The 1871 Census finds him aged "22" and unmarried, living at 311, Horton Lane in Horton, Bradford, Yorkshire in the household of his brother Horatio Thomas (1), together with his other brothers William Henry (3) and Reuben Alfred (1). He is described as a draper's assistant out of employment.
In 1874 he married Nancy Crabtree [Marriage Index: Bradford, Y. 9b 80, 1874 (Dec)]. She was born in Bradford in 1850 [Birth Index: Bradford, Yk. 23 116, 1850 (Dec)] to parents John Crabtree (an innkeeper in Bradford in 1861) and his wife Grace.
The 1881 Census finds him aged "32" living with Nancy and the first two children listed below at 1, St. Augustine Terrace in Bradford and occupied as a commercial traveller in drapery. Nancy's age is given as "30" and her birthplace as Bradford. Also in the household was an unmarried visitor Martha Ann Crabtree aged "20" who was Nancy's much younger sister.
The 1891 Census finds him aged "42" living with Nancy and four children at 2, Chatham Street in Bradford and occupied as a draper's assistant.
The 1901 Census finds him aged "52" living with Nancy and five children at the same address and again occupied as a draper's assistant.
He died in 1906 aged 57 [Death Index: Bradford 9b 19, 1906 (March)]. Nancy died in 1912 aged 61 [Death Index: Bradford 9b 162, 1912 (June)].
