Brief biography

William (9) Hogger was born in 1854 to parents William (6) Hogger and his first wife Amelia (nee) Ramplin [Birth Index: Cosford 4a 511, 1854 (March)]. He was christened on September 19th 1854 at Lavenham [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1861 Census finds him at age "7" living with his parents at Brent Eleigh.

His future wife was Eleanor (nee) Mills. She was an apparently illegitimate daughter of Eliza (nee) Mills and was christened on October 15th 1854 at Thorpe Morieux [PR: Cosford DB], although her census records consistently give her birthplace as Cockfield. Records spell her forename variously as Eleanor, Ellenor or Ellen. The 1861 Census finds her living in Cockfield as Eleanor Gooch with her mother who by then had married a man named James Gooch.

Extensive searches in the 1871 Census have failed to locate William (9).

William (9) married Eleanor in 1877 [Marriage Index: Cosford 4a 919, 1877 (Dec)]. The GRO index names her as "Ellen Milles". They married on November 10th 1877 at Brent Eleigh [PR: Cosford DB]. The marriage certificate cites no name for her father. The witnesses were George Hogger - almost certainly William (9)'s brother George (3) - and George (3)'s future wife Ellen Gridley, a niece of William (6)'s second wife Harriet Gridley.

The 1881 Census finds them living with one child at Marls Hall in Brent Eleigh, and gives his birthplace not as Lavenham but as Brent Eleigh.

The 1891 Census finds them living with five children at Marls Hall Cottages in Brent Eleigh where he was occupied as a farm servant.

The 1901 Census finds them living with three children at Town Hill in Brent Eleigh where was occupied as a woodman.

Eleanor was buried at age "80" on August 22nd 1934 at Brent Eleigh, having last resided in the Alms Houses there [PR: Cosford DB].

William (9) was buried at age "82" on December 21st 1936 at Brent Eleigh [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1901 Census finds Anna Adelaide (1) living in the household of a civil engineer Thomas P. Gaskell at 91, Nightingale Lane in Battersea, London where she was occupied as a parlourmaid. Her birthplace is given, perhaps in error, as Lavenham and her age, somewhat inaccurately, as "24". She married in 1906 [Marriage Index: Camberwell 1d 1428, 1906 (June)].

The 1901 Census finds Robert William (1) at age "20" boarding at the White Horse Inn, North Street in Sudbury with the family of the inn's licensed victualler George Ramplin. The latter, aged "31" and born in Hadleigh, was probably related to Robert William (1)'s grandmother Amelia (nee) Ramplin. Robert William (1) evidently married in 1901 [Marriage Index: Ipswich 4a 1917, 1901 (Dec)]. He died in 1904 [Death Index: Cosford 4a 417, 1904 (June)] and was buried at Brent Eleigh aged "22 years" on April 30th [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1901 Census finds Amelia Harriet (1) at age "17" living with her parents. The schedule contains a note that she had "crippled hands and feet from birth". She died in 1912 and was buried at Brent Eleigh at age "27" on June 29th [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1901 Census finds William (10) at age "14" living in the household of a beerhouse keeper John Cooper at 94-96, Wood Street in Walthamstow, Essex where he was occupied as a general domestic help.

The 1901 Census finds Walter George (1) at age "11" living with his parents.
