Brief biography

William (17) Hogger was born in Playford around 1821-22 to parents Turner William (1) Hogger and his wife Sarah (nee) Garwood. A christening record for him has not yet been found.

The 1841 Census finds him living with his parents in Playford with no cited occupation.

His future wife was Elizabeth (nee) Scarlett, born at Rushmere around 1824. The 1841 Census finds her at (rounded) age "15" living in Yoxford where she was occupied as a servant. Around early 1845 she produced, by a partner unknown, an illegitimate child Charlotte Scarlett.

In 1846 William (17) married Elizabeth [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 12, 727, 1846 (Sept)].

The 1851 Census finds him with Elizabeth, together with Charlotte and two younger children, living near his parents in Playford where he was occupied as an agricultural labourer.

The 1861 Census finds them still in Playford with many more children.

The 1871 Census finds them at Playford Heath, again with many children.

In 1878 Elizabeth died aged "53" [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a 452, 1878 (Dec) - indexed as "Hoggar"]. She was buried at Playford on November 24th 1878 [St. Mary Parish Register].

The 1881 Census finds William (17) widowed and living at Lucks Farm in Playford with just two of his sons. He was still occupied as an agricultural labourer.

In 1889 William (17) died aged "66" [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a 486a, 1889 (March)]. He was buried at Playford on February 19th 1889 [St. Mary Parish Register].

Eliza (4) was christened at St. Mary, Playford on October 31st 1847 [St. Mary Parish Register]. She was with her parents in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 Censuses. In 1871 she married Henry Binstead [Marriage Index: Ipswich 4a 967, 1871 (Sept) - indexed as "Hagger"]. He was born in Little Bealings or Playford around 1844-45. The 1881 Census finds them living with two children in Bramford Street, Bramford in Suffolk where Henry was occupied as a coal carter. The 1891 Census finds them living there with seven children and Henry again occupied as a coal carter. The 1901 Census finds them living there with six children and Henry occupied as a grocer's porter.

Caleb Turner (1) was christened at St. Mary, Playford on August 26th 1849 [St. Mary Parish Register]. He was with his parents in the 1851 and 1861 Censuses. In 1870 he married Sarah Dowsing [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 4a 1398, 1870 (Dec)]. She was born in Bredfield in 1849 [Birth Index: Woodbridge 4a 537, 1849 (June)] to parents Dennis Dowsing and Lydia (nee) Burrows who had married in 1847 [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 12 999, 1847 (Dec)]. The 1871 Census finds Caleb and Sarah living at 13, Woodbridge Road in Rushmere St. Andrew where he was occupied as an agricultural labourer. Later in the 1870s they evidently moved to the Kirkby Wharf/Ulleskelf district of Yorkshire where their daughter Elizabeth was born. The 1881 Census finds them living with three children at 2, Well Hall Cottages in Gayton, Norfolk. The 1891 and 1901 Censuses each find them living with four children in Winch Road, Gayton where Caleb was occupied as an agricultural labourer.

Cubit Sidney (1) was christened as "Cubitt Sidney" at St. Mary, Playford on March 14th 1852 [St. Mary Parish Register]. He was registered at birth as simply "Cubit". He was often called simply "Sydney" in his adult life. He was with his parents in the 1861 and 1871 Censuses. In 1874 he married - as "Sydney" - Mary Eliza King [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 4a 988, 1874 (June)]. She was born in Rushmere around 1850-51 [Birth Index: Woodbridge 12 548, 1851 (March)]. The 1881 Census finds them and their son Robert W. aged "3" living at 8, Heath Road in Rushmere where Cubit was occupied as an agricultural labourer. Also in the household was his sister Julia Hannah (1). The 1891 Census finds the family living in Greyhound Road, Rushmere where Cubit - entered as "Sidney" - was still occupied as an agricultural labourer. He died aged "44" in 1897 [Death Index: Ipswich 4a 556, 1897 (Sept)].

Charles William (1) was christened at St. Mary, Playford on June 4th 1854 [St. Mary Parish Register]. He was with his parents in the 1861 and 1871 Censuses. He has not been found in the 1881 Census. He married Rose Scarlett in 1888 [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 4a 1071, 1888 (Sept)]. She was born in Little Bealings around 1863-64. The 1891 Census finds them living in Angel Lane, Woodbridge where Charles was occupied as a domestic gardener. He died - registered as simply "Charles" - aged "43" in 1898 [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a 597, 1898 (Sept)]. The 1901 Census finds Rose as a widowed laundress living with a daughter Edith aged "9" in Angel Lane.

Samuel (5) was christened at St. Mary, Playford on June 15th 1855 [St. Mary Parish Register]. He was with his parents in the 1861 and 1871 Censuses. In 1876 he married Emma Julia Smith [Marriage Index: Ipswich 4a 766, 1876 (March)]. She was born in Kesgrave, just east of Ipswich, in 1858 [Birth Index: Ipswich 4a 536, 1858 (June)]. The 1881 Census finds them with three children living at Water Mill Quay in Woodbridge where Samuel (5) was occupied as a miller's carman. His birthplace is given, apparently in error, as Kesgrave which lies just 2 miles south of Playford. The 1891 Census finds them with seven children living in Seckford Street, Woodbridge where Samuel (5) was still occupied as a carman. Here his birthplace is given correctly as Playford. The 1901 Census finds them, again with seven children, living in Theatre Street, Woodbridge where Samuel (5) was now occupied as a maltster. He died aged "65" in 1923 [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a 945, 1923 (June)].

Frederick (2) was with his parents in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Censuses. In 1881 he was occupied as an agricultural labourer. In 1882 he married Hannah Eliza Frost [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 4a 1071, 1882 (Sept)]. She was born in 1859 [Birth Index: Woodbridge 4a (page unclear), 1859 (Dec)]. The 1891 Census finds them with three children - including two sons interestingly named Newton Frank (1) and Jubilee James (1) - living at The Brook in Playford where Frederick (2) was again occupied as an agricultural labourer. The 1901 Census finds them with just their daughter Harriet Emily (1) living at Brook Cottages in Playford where Frederick (2) was occupied as a farm labourer. The same census finds Newton Frank (1) and Jubilee James (1) both serving as staff at the Constitutional Club - a Conservative political club - in Northumberland Avenue, St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London where Jubilee was described also as a page.

David (1) was christened at St. Mary, Playford on September 23rd 1860 [St. Mary Parish Register]. He was with his parents in the 1861 Census. He died in 1863 [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a 441, 1863 (March)] and was buried aged "2 years and 8 months" on April 3rd 1863 [St. Mary Parish Register].

Albert (1) was christened at St. Mary, Playford on August 25th 1862 [St. Mary Parish Register]. He was with his parents in the 1871 and 1881 Censuses. His future wife was Jane Hannah (or Hannah Jane) Stevenson (or Stephenson), born around 1865 in Offton. No GRO birth reference has yet been found for her. The 1871 Census finds her aged "6" living with her parents James and Anna M. at Potash Farm in Offton. The 1881 Census finds her as a servant aged "16" living at 3, Heath Road in Rushmere. Albert (1) married her in 1882 [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 4a 1074, 1882 (Sept)]. The 1891 Census finds them with five children living at Great Blakenham where Albert (1) was occupied as a farm labourer. In 1901 the family was living in Runcorn Street, Bramford where Albert (1) was occupied as a stockman on a farm. Several of their children were registered at birth with curious - or curiously-spelt - forenames, including Elizabeth Bessy (1), James Berty (1), Caleb Terrey S. (1), Gertrude Snowey C. (1) and Warrington Wilson V. (1). The 1901 Census finds their son James Berty (1) aged "18" serving as a private in the 3rd Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment at St. Peter Port in Guernsey. Another of their sons was Albert Frederick (1) Hogger, born in 1886 [Birth Index: Blything 4a 903, 1886 (March)]. The 1891 Census finds him living with his parents. The 1901 Census finds him serving as an infantry private at the Depot of the Suffolk Regiment in Bury St. Edmunds. He was killed in action on Tuesday, July 31st 1917 while serving as Private 40386 in the 2nd Batallion of the Lincolnshire Regiment and was buried at the Perth Cemetery (China Wall), Zillebebe at Ieper in Belgium as detailed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission page. His home address (or that of his parents) is given there as Bramford.

Louisa (1) was christened privately at St. Mary, Playford on February 3rd 1865 [St. Mary Parish Register]. She died aged 4 [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a 435, 1869 (March)] and was buried on March 5th 1869 [St. Mary Parish Register].

Julia Hannah (1) was christened at St. Mary, Playford on March 31st 1867 [St. Mary Parish Register]. She was with her parents in the 1871 Census. The 1881 Census finds her at age "13" living with, or perhaps just visiting, the family of her brother Cubit Sydney (1) in Rushmere. The 1891 Census finds her as an inmate of the Woodbridge Union workhouse in Nacton, described as a pauper. It seems odd that she was there, since she had many siblings who could have taken her into their care rather than see her despatched to a workhouse. It appears that a few years later she partnered Alfred George R. Kidby who was born around early 1873 [Birth Index: Yarmouth 4b 25, 1873 (March)]. No marriage reference has yet been found for them. The 1901 Census finds them with two young daughters - the first born in Willesden, London and the second in Ipswich - living at 4, Little Wolsey Street in Ipswich St. Nicholas where Alfred was occupied as a labourer in a tar yard.

Elizabeth's child by partner unknown

  1. Charlotte Scarlett - born at Rushmere [Birth Index: Woodbridge 12 xx5(? - page unclear), 1845 (March)]

The 1851 Census finds Charlotte at age "6" living with her mother and William (17), being entered as Charlotte "Hogger". The 1861 Census finds her as Charlotte "Scarlett" at age "16" living in the household of a farmer Thomas Clarkson in Playford where she was occupied as a kitchenmaid.
