The 1861 Census finds him at age "4" living with his parents at Lean Hill Farm in Willingale Spain, Essex.
He appears to have been absent from his family home in the 1871 Census and his location at that time is unknown.
In 1879 he married Elizabeth Jane Baker in London [Marriage Index: Pancras 1b 175, 1879 (June)]. She was born in London around 1857-58 and her birth reference is probably [Birth Index: Pancras 1b 103, 1857 (June)].
The 1881 Census finds him at age "24" living with Elizabeth and their first child at 8, Elderton Road in Lewisham, Kent where he was occupied as an engine driver, as his father had previously been.
The 1891 Census finds him at age "34" living with Elizabeth and five children at 18, Elric Street in Hammersmith, London where he was occupied as a stationary engine driver.
The 1901 Census finds him at age "44" living with Elizabeth and seven children at 106, Claxton Grove in Fulham, London where he was still occupied as an engine driver.
He died aged "68" in early 1925 [Death Index: Islington 1b 235, 1925 (March)], and Elizabeth also died aged "68" later that year [Death Index: Edmonton 3a 670, 1925 (Dec)].
The 1901 Census finds James Walter (1) living with his parents and occupied as a switchboard attendant. He married in 1901 [Marriage Index: Fulham 1a 634, 1901 (Sept)].
The 1901 Census finds Elizabeth Jane (3) living with her parents and occupied as a domestic servant. She married in 1906 [Marriage Index: Fulham 1a 344, 1906 (March)].
The 1901 Census finds Louisa Anne (1) at age "17" living with numerous other servants at 21, Penywern Road near Earl's Court in Kensington where she was occupied as a kitchenmaid. She and the others may all have been in service to a widow Maria Emily Gill, the sole occupier of the adjacent property No. 19 who was described as the proprietress and manageress of a ladies' residential club. The 1891 Census finds Sarah Ann Ellen (1) named simply as "Ellen" at age "3" living with her parents. The 1901 Census finds her as "Nellie" at age "15" living in the household of an unmarried Scots tailor James Haugh at 27, St. Stephen's Avenue in Hammersmith where she was occupied as a domestic servant. She gave her birthplace mistakenly as Hammersmith where she had lived since her early childhood. She married in 1905 [Marriage Index: Fulham 1a 644, 1905 (Sept)].
