Brief biography

Peter (2) Hogger was born to parents Bartholomew (3) Hogger and his wife Martha (nee) Lemon. He was christened on August 12th 1829 at Monks Eleigh [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1841 Census finds him living with his parents in High Street, Monks Eleigh.

The 1851 Census appears to find him at age "19" living in Church Street, St. John Hackney in London in the household of a master butcher Thomas B. Pain where he was occupied as a servant and butcher. His birthplace is given as Monks Eleigh.

In 1856 he married Sarah Bailey [Marriage Index: Stepney 1c 842, 1856 (March)]. She was born in London around 1838/39.

The 1861 Census finds him aged "28" living with Sarah and three children in a cottage on Lean Hill Farm in Willingale Spain, Essex where he was occupied as an engineer and driver (steam threshing mechanic). Willingale Spain was located in northern Essex between Ongar and Chelmsford.

Sarah probably died in 1862 [Death Index: Ongar 4a 44, 1862 (March)].

He subsequently married or partnered a woman named Mary Ann whose maiden name is not yet known. She was born around 1836/37 in Middlesex. She may already have had children of her own.

The 1871 Census finds them with six children living at 8, Nicholay Terrace, Upper Holloway in Islington, London. His age is given as "42", his birthplace as "Suffolk" and his occupation as engine driver. His sons John (5) and William (15) were both occupied as labourers. Also present was a widow Mary Bailey aged "66" with birthplace Islington, who may have been his former wife's mother.

Peter (2) died aged "42" in 1872 [Death Index: Islington 1b 161, 1872 (June)].

Extensive searches have so far failed to locate Mary Ann or most of their children in subsequent censuses. It is suspected that Mary Ann took a new partner and that she and the children adopted that partner's surname thereafter.

His children by Sarah Bailey

  1. Peter (6) Hogger
  2. Sarah Ann (5) Hogger - probably [Birth Index: W. Ham 4a 4, 1858 (June)]
  3. John Robert (1) Hogger - born in Willingale Spain - [Birth Index: Ongar 4a 70, 1860 (March)]
  4. James Victor (1) Hogger - born in Willingale Spain around 1861-62

The 1861 Census finds Sarah Ann (5) at age "3" living with her parents and her birthplace given as Willingale Spain but she was more probably born at Stratford, as was (apparently) her old older brother Peter (6). She was not with her parents in the 1871 Census and her location at that time is unknown. The 1881 Census possibly finds her at age "23" as a servant living in the household of a barrister William John Abram at 22, Devonshire Road in St. Mary, Islington. Or, it possibly finds her at age "20" as a servant living in the household of a bank clerk William Barry at 25, Winchester Road in Willesden. Both of these Sarah Anns give their birthplace as simply "Essex". She married George Berton M. Hack in 1896 [Marriage Index: Islington 1b 467, 1896 (Dec)]. He was born in St. George's Hospital, London around 1830-31. The 1901 Census finds them living, with no children, at 35, Grove Road in Islington and describes George as a retired postman.

The 1861 Census finds John Robert (1) at age "1" living with his parents and gives his birthplace as Willingale Spain. The 1871 Census finds him again living with his parents and his birthplace now given as Stratford and his age as "13", both details probably being given in error. He has not been found in any subsequent source.

The 1881 Census finds James Victor (1) aged "19" living in the household of a physician Achille Vintras at 141, Regent Street in Westminster St. James, London where he was occupied as a footman. He probably first married in 1885 to Ann Jones [Marriage Index: Orsett 4a 377, 1885 (Sept) - bride indexed as "Annie"]. She was born in Staffordshire around 1858. They have not been found in the 1891 Census. The 1901 Census appears to find them living, with no children, at 46, Great Ormond Street in St. Andrew and St. George the Martyr parish in the borough of Holborn, London. No occupation was cited for him. His birthplace is given simply as "Essex". Ann died aged "43" in 1902 [Death Index: Holborn 1b 368, 1902 (June)]. James Victor (1) appears to have remarried in 1912 to Eliza E. (nee?) Harris [Marriage Index: Kensington 1a 423, 1912 (June)].

His children by Mary Ann (...?)

  1. Edward (2) Hogger - born in Camden Town [Birth Index: Pancras 1b 149, 1866 (Dec)]
  2. Theresa (4) Hogger - born in Islington [Birth Index: Islington 1b 267, 1869 (March)]
  3. Martha (4) Hogger - born in 1870 in Highgate, Middlesex
  4. and possibly others ...

Martha (4) died aged "1" in 1872 [Death Index: Islington 1b 166, 1872 (June)], at about the same time as Peter (2) died.

Probable child of Mary Ann (...?) by a previous partner

  1. William (15) "Hogger" - born around 1858/59 in Stratford, Essex

William (15) was not in Peter (2)'s household in the 1861 Census but he was so in the 1871 Census. His natural father was probably a former partner or husband of Mary Ann.
