The 1851 Census finds him at age "11" living, or staying, in the household of his uncle Berechiah Underwood at 5, Cardinal's Cap Yard in St. Mary the Great, Cambridge. Berechiah was occupied as a wheelwright and smith.
He has not been found in the 1861 Census.
He married or partnered a woman named Margaret whose maiden name is unknown. She was born around 1848 in Dublin, Ireland.
The 1871 Census finds them living in what appears to have been army accommodation in Aldershot, Hampshire where James (6) was serving as a soldier in the Royal 12th Regiment of Lancers. With them was their child Alice Maud (1).
The 1881 Census finds the family living at 39, Norfolk Terrace in St. Andrew the Less, Cambridge where James (6) was now occupied as a blacksmith.
The 1891 Census finds them living at 17, Guildhall Place in St. Mary the Great, Cambridge where James (6) was again occupied as a blacksmith.
The 1901 Census finds them living at 1, Parsonage Street in Cambridge where James (6) was still occupied as a blacksmith.
James (6) died aged "72" in 1914 [Death Index: Cambridge 3b 463, 1914 (Sept)].
Margaret died aged "79" in 1926 [Death Index: Cambridge 3b 541, 1926 (March)].
The 1881 and 1891 Censuses find Alice Maud (1) living with her parents. In 1894 she married Thomas Spencer Carrott [Marriage Index: Cambridge 3b 746, 1894 (March)]. He was born in Peterborough, Northamptonshire in 1868 [Birth Index: Peterbro' 3b 216, 1868 (Dec)]. The 1901 Census finds them living with one child Alice Margaret [Birth Index: W. Ham 4a 195, 1895 (Sept)] aged "5" at 14, Holness Road in West Ham, Essex where Thomas Spencer was occupied as a locomotive fitter.
The 1881 and 1891 Censuses find Emily (2) living with her parents. In 1895 she married Samuel Derby [Marriage Index: Cambridge 3b 535, 1895 (March)]. He was born in Cambridge around 1871. The 1901 Census finds them living with three daughters at 110, Ainsworth Street in Cambridge where Samuel was occupied as a publican. Emily (2)'s birthplace is given as Aldershot.
The 1891 Census finds Theresa (2) at age "17" occupied as a domestic housemaid in the household of a railway officer Walter R. Haywood at 71, King Henry's Road in Hampstead, London. She has not been found in the 1901 Census.
The 1901 Census finds Charles Spencer (1) at age "21" living with his parents in Cambridge and occupied as a blacksmith. He is described as a British Subject born in India. He married in 1904 [Marriage Index: Cambridge 3b 1054, 1904 (Sept)].
William George (2) was with his parents at age "8" in the 1891 Census. He has not been found in the 1901 Census.
No birth reference has been found for Susan (4). The 1891 Census finds her at age "6" living with her parents. She has not been found in the 1901 Census.
