Brief biography

Elizabeth (3) Hogger was born in 1859 to parents Peter (3) Hogger and his wife Lucy (nee) Snell [Birth Index: Cosford 4a 440, 1859 (June)]. She was christened on June 12th 1859 at Brent Eleigh [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1861 Census finds her at age "1" living with her parents in Brent Eleigh.

Neither she nor her parents have been found in the 1871 Census.

In about 1880 she was in service as a housemaid in a gentleman's family, presumed to have been in London. She became pregnant and was confined at a "Home of Hope" at 4-6, Regent Square, St. Pancras. This is where the 1881 Census finds her, described as a [former] servant aged "21". The "Homes of Hope" institutions constituted a charity founded by the Earl of Shaftesbury with the aim of providing shelter and redemption for "fallen" and friendless young women.

She gave birth on June 5th 1881 and named the child Albert Herbert ("Bertie") (1) Hogger [Birth Index: Pancras 1b 59, 1881 (Sept)]. She resided at the Home of Hope for seven weeks, but after a month had passed the child was taken away from her and passed to the care of a Mrs. Andrews in Kings Cross, London. Here he evidently suffered gross neglect, and was eventually taken to Lavenham and cared for by others, but his life could not be saved [Death Index: Cosford 4a 376, 1882 (March)]. An inquest was conducted in early March 1882 and was reported at length in several newspapers. It was alleged that Mrs. Andrews had been a drunkard. The identity of the child's father was not disclosed and it was claimed that he not been aware of the pregnancy and that his whereabouts were unknown. The inquest concluded that the child had died primarily from brain damage caused by a fall or blow to the head, but how this had happened could not be determined. The Jury considered that "the mother had done her duty by the child".

Elizabeth (3) married a Spaniard named Antonio Duran at the Trinity Church in St. Marylebone on July 20th 1884 [Marriage Index: Marylebone 1a 1151, 1884 (Sept)]. The register describes her father Peter (3) as a labourer and Antonio's father as a deceased farmer. Both parties gave their address as 135 Great Titchfield Street. Antonio's age is given as 26 and his occupation as cook.

She has not yet been located in the 1891 Census. However, that census possibly finds Antonio, described as married and aged 34, lodging at 57, Great Russell Street in Bloomsbury in the company of another Spaniard, an ummarried woman aged 29 named Consuela Oler.

Nothing more is known of Elizabeth (3).

Her child by father unknown
