Brief biography

Cornelius (1) Hogger was born in 1844 to parents William (4) Hogger and his wife Elizabeth (nee) Andrews [Birth Index: Cosford 12 294, 1844 (Sept)]. He was christened on September 1st 1844 at Groton [PR: Cosford DB, IGI: Batch C062971].

The 1861 Census finds him living with his parents in Groton Street, Groton and occupied as a boot maker.

His future wife was Jane De Roure, born to parents Joseph De Roure and his wife Jane in 1843 [Birth Index: Bethnal Green 2 4, 1843 (June) - indexed as "De Rowe"]. The family generally spelled their surname as "Deroure" or "Derowre" in various sources. The 1841 Census finds Joseph with just his wife living in Fuller Street, St. Matthew parish in Bethnal Green where he was occupied as a weaver. The 1851 Census finds them with two children - including Jane aged "8" - living at 24, Fuller Street where Joseph was occupied as a silk weaver. The 1861 Census finds them with five children - including Jane aged "17" and occupied as a milliner - living at the same address where Joseph was now occupied as a waiter and his wife as a silk winder.

Cornelius (1) married Jane in 1866 [Marriage Index: Bethnal Green 1c 619, 1866 (Dec)].

The 1871 Census finds Cornelius (1) and Jane living with three children at 26, Fuller Street in Bethnal Green where he was again occupied as a boot maker. By now, Joseph De Roure had died [Death Index: Bethnal Green 1c 214, 1862 (Sept) - indexed as "Derure"], and this census finds his widow living at 47, Fuller Street with her three youngest children - Clara Ann, Joseph Charles and Laura Sarah - and still occupied as a silk winder.

The 1881 Census finds Cornelius (1) and Jane living with seven children at 26, Fuller Street where he was again occupied as a boot and shoe maker.

The 1891 Census finds the family living at 49, Warner Place, Bethnal Green where he was again occupied as a shoe maker.

The 1901 Census finds the family again living at 49, Warner Place and Cornelius (1) occupied as a cordwainer and bootmaker.

Jane appears to have died aged "68" in 1911 [Death Index: Bethnal Green 1c 198, 1911 (Dec)].

Cornelius (1) died aged 82 in 1926 [Death Index: Bethnal Green 1c 155, 1926 (Dec)].

Elizabeth Jane (1) was christened at St. Matthew's Church in Bethnal Green on August 3rd 1873, as so also was Henry Charles (1) [IGI: Batch C046984]. The 1891 Census finds her occupied as an assistant to an unmarried stationer Florence Chivers at 140, Bethnal Green Road, St. Matthew Parish in Bethnal Green. In 1892 she married George Albert Davis [Marriage Index: Whitechapel 1c 467, 1892 (Sept)]. He was born in or near Great Malvern, Worcestershire around 1868-69. His birth reference is probably [Birth Index: Martley 6c 292, 1869 (March)]. The 1901 Census finds them living with three children at 11, Pretoria Terrace off Bury Street in Edmonton where George Albert was occupied as a schoolmaster.

The 1891 Census finds Laura (1) at age "22" and unmarried, occupied as a domestic servant in the household of Henry Heasman at 119, Rylston Road in Fulham. The 1901 Census finds her still unmarried and living with her parents in Bethnal Green. She was occupied as a lady's maid.

Cornelius William (1) was christened on January 15th 1871 at St. Matthew's Church in Bethnal Green [IGI Batch C046984]. The 1891 Census finds him at age "20" living with his parents and occupied as a coachman. The 1901 Census finds him still living with his parents and again occupied as a coachman. He married in 1911 [Marriage Index: Bethnal Green 1c 241, 1911 (June)]. He died aged "66" in Rochford, Essex around early 1937 [Death Index: Rochford 4a 1037, 1937 (March)].

Henry Charles (1) was born on July 13th 1873 and was christened on August 3rd 1873 at St. Matthew's Church in Bethnal Green [IGI Batch C046984], as so also was Elizabeth Jane (1). The 1891 Census finds him at age "17" living with his parents and occupied as a commercial clerk. He first partnered a woman named Georgina, born in London around 1880. No marriage reference has yet been found for them. The 1901 Census finds them with two children - Henry Stanley (1) [Birth Index: Maidstone 2a 819, 1899 (June)] and Victor Ernest (1) [Birth Index: Grimsby 7a 640, 1901 (March)] - living at 15, Hope Street in Clee, Lincolnshire where Henry Charles (1) was occupied as a railway porter. Subsequently, they probably also produced Queenie Georgina (1) [Birth Index: Grimsby 7a 621, 1903 (June)] and Edith Ada (1) [Birth Index: Grimsby 7a 640, 1905 (March)]. It is not yet known what became of Georgina. In 1915 Henry Charles (1) evidently married Margaret A. Sylvester [Marriage Index: Grimsby 7a 1797, 1915 (Sept)]. They produced at least one son Hugh Alphonso (1) who died aged "25" on November 28th 1940 whilst serving as a sergeant (Service No. 751500) in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He (or his parents) had been living at Alford in Lincolnshire. These details are drawn from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database.

The 1891 Census finds Alice Louisa (1) at age "15" occupied as a housemaid in the household of a widow Annie Shuson at 71, Longridge Road in Kensington. The 1901 Census finds her living with her parents and occupied as a paper bag maker. She married in 1903 [Marriage Index: W. Ham 4a 316, 1903 (Sept)].

The 1901 Census finds Alfred James (1) living with his parents and occupied as a cabinet maker. He married in 1901 [Marriage Index: Bethnal Green 1c 400, 1901 (Dec)]. His wife's name was either Rosetta Curtis or Matilda Susannah Innocent. He died aged "37" in 1915 [Death Index: Bethnal Green 1c 208, 1915 (Dec)].

The 1901 Census finds Arthur (2) living with his parents and occupied as a brush maker. He married in 1903 [Marriage Index: Bethnal Green 1c 211, 1903 (March)].

The following were probably offspring of, variously, Alfred James (1) and Arthur (2):

  1. Alice (4) Hogger [Birth Index: Bethnal Green 1c 205, 1903 (Sept)]
  2. Lily (1) Hogger [Birth Index: Bethnal Green 1c 161, 1903 (Dec)]
