Brief biography

Bartholomew (6) Hogger was born to parents William (3) Hogger and his partner Elizabeth (nee) Whymark. He was christened on April 7th 1823 at Layham, Suffolk [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1841 Census finds him living at the Rectory in Monks Eleigh where he was occupied as a servant.

Later in the 1840s he moved to London and joined the Metropolitan Police service as a constable. In 1848 he gave witness testimony to a trial at the Old Bailey, as detailed on this page [Proceedings of the Old Bailey].

In 1850 he married Ellen Sarah Kent [Marriage Index: Hackney 3 195, 1850 (Sept)]. She was born in Rochford, Essex around 1830-31.

The 1851 Census finds them living near William (3) at 6, Bouham Street in St. John Hackney. Bartholomew (6) was occupied as a police constable. With them was their infant son William (16), aged "2 months".

The 1861 Census finds the family, now with five children, living at "Rustic Cottage", Woodbine Cottages in Hackney where Bartholomew (6) was occupied as a coachman.

The 1871 Census finds them at the same address with nine children. Bartholomew (6) was again occupied as a coachman, as also was his son William (16). Also present was his widowed mother Elizabeth aged "83".

Ellen Sarah died aged "48" in 1877 [Death Index: Hackney 1b 356, 1877 (March)].

Bartholomew (6) died aged "55" in 1879 [Death Index: Hackney 1b 346, 1879 (June)].

William (16) died aged "22" in 1874 [Death Index: Hackney 1b 294, 1874 (March)].

Ellen Sarah (1) was christened at St. John Hackney on December 26th 1852 [IGI: Batch 8422205 - indexed as "Oger"]. She married William Thomas Murphy in 1875 [Marriage Index: Hackney 1b 742, 1875 (June) - indexed as "Hoggar"]. He was born in Colchester, Essex in 1853 [Birth Index: Colchester 4a 221, 1853 (June)]. The 1881 Census finds them living with three children at 76, Settles Street in Hamlet (Mile End Old Town), London where William Thomas was occupied as a policeman. Also present was Ellen Sarah's brother Richard (1). The 1891 Census finds them living with nine children at 41, Settles Street where William Thomas was occupied as a commission agent. The 1901 Census finds them with four children living at 48, Sussex Street in Poplar where William Thomas was occupied as a distraining broker, clothing dealer and merchant tailor. Ellen Sarah (1) died in 1912 aged "59" [Death Index: Stepney 1c 357, 1912 (June)].

Caroline (1) married William Henry Myers in 1879 [Marriage Index: Hackney 1b 828, 1879 (Sept) - indexed under "Hoggar"]. He was born in St. Pancras, London in 1854, his birth reference being either [Birth Index: St. Pancras 1b 18, 1854 (Sept)] or [Birth Index: St. Pancras 1b 34, 1854 (Dec)]. The 1881 Census finds them living with their infant son Sydney at 1, Rustic Cottages, Homerton Terrace where William Henry was occupied as an assistant store keeper. Also present were Caroline (1)'s unmarried siblings Bartholomew Archibald (1), Charles Henry (2), Alfred (4) and Mary Ann (5). The 1891 Census finds them living with two children at the Divisional Office in Eden House, Hackney where William Henry was occupied as a caretaker. Also present was Mary Ann (5). The 1901 Census finds them living at the School Board Office in Homerton Terrace where William Henry was a caretaker and messenger for the London Schools Board. Also present, again, was Mary Ann (5). Caroline (1) may have died in 1909 aged "55" [Death Index: Barnet 3a 188, 1909 (Dec)]. William Henry probably died in 1912 aged "58" [Death Index: Hackney 1b 604, 1912 (Dec)].

The 1881 Census finds Elizabeth (6) unmarried at age "24" living in the household of a retired Army Major Wilmer Owen Harris at 3, Urswick Road in St. John Hackney where she was occupied as a domestic servant. In 1884 she married Neil Conway [Marriage Index: Whitechapel 1c 596, 1884 (March) - indexed under "Hoggar"]. He was born in Derry, Ireland around 1856-57. The 1891 Census finds them living with three children at Church Hill in Spondon, Derbyshire where Neil was occupied as a stone mason. Neil died aged "40" in 1897 [Death Index: Shardlow 7b 277, 1897 (March)]. In 1900 Elizabeth (6) remarried to a widower Enoch Litchfield [Marriage Index: Derby 7b 1036, 1900 (Sept)]. He was born in Liverpool in 1856 [Birth Index: Liverpool 8b 4, 1856 (June)]. In 1876 he had married Frances ("Fanny") Elson in Manchester [Marriage Index: Chorlton 8c 1110, 1876 (June)] and by 1891 was living with her in Spondon almost next to Elizabeth (6)'s family. Fanny was born in 1851 [Birth Index: Shardlow 19 667, 1851 (March)] and died aged "44" in 1898 [Death Index: Shardlow 7b 281, 1898 (June)]. The 1901 Census finds Elizabeth (6) and Enoch living with two of his children and three of hers at the "Hare and Hounds" Public House, No. 26, Erasmus Street in Derby where Enoch was occupied as a stone grate grinder.

Miriam (2) may well have been a child of Bartholomew (6), named after his sister Miriam (1). She appears to have died in 1860 [Death Index: Hackney 1b 216, 1860 (Dec)].

The 1881 Census finds Bartholomew Archibald (1) at age "20" living in the household of his married sister Caroline (1) where he was occupied as a painter and decorator. In 1884 he married Fanny Dunnings [Marriage Index: W. Ham 4a 198, 1884 (June) - indexed as "Archibald"]. Fanny was born in Bartley in the New Forest in 1858 [Birth Index: New Forest 2b 507, 1858 (Dec) - indexed as "Fanny"]. The 1891 Census finds them living with three children at 38, Victoria Road in Walthamstow where he was occupied as a house painter. The 1901 Census finds them living with five children at 22, Byfield Road in Walthamstow where he was again occupied as a house painter.

The 1881 Census finds Charles Henry (2) at age "17" living in the household of his married sister Caroline (1) where he was occupied as a grocer's assistant. In 1886 he married Maria Louisa Sharpe [Marriage Index: Hackney 1b 834, 1886 (Sept) - indexed as "Hoggar"]. She was born in 1864 [Birth Index: Clerkenwell 1b 581, 1864 (June)]. The 1891 Census finds them living with three children at 36, Victoria Road in Walthamstow - neighbouring the home of Bartholomew Archibald (1) - where Charles was occupied as an oilman's manager. The 1901 Census finds them living with six children at 743, High Road in Tottenham where he was occupied as an oil and coalman's shopkeeper. One of their sons was Percival Charles (1) Hogger, born in 1889 [Birth Index: W. Ham 4a 262, 1889 (March)]. He was killed in action on September 15th 1916 while serving as Private 73565 in the 28th Batallion of the Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment) and was buried at the Serre Road Cemetery No. 2 at Serre in France as detailed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission page. His home address (or that of his parents) is given there as 66, Kynaston Road in Enfield. This source gives his nationality at that time as Canadian, possibly in error. Another son of Charles Henry (2) and Maria Louisa was Arthur William (3) Hogger, born in 1890 [Birth Index: W. Ham 4a 264, 1890 (Dec) - indexed as "Hoggar"]. In 1913 he married Ivy Rose Harris [Marriage Index: Edmonton 3a 1154, 1913 (Dec) - indexed as "Hoggar"]. He died on July 17th 1942 while serving as Squadron Leader 31159 in the Royal Air Force and was buried at the Northwood Cemetery in Middlesex as detailed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission page. His home address (or that of his parents) is given there as Northwood Hills in Middlesex.

The 1881 Census finds Richard (1) at age "16" living in the household of his married sister Ellen Sarah (1) where he was occupied as a railway porter. The 1891 Census finds him still living with her at age "26" and occupied as a carman. In 1893 he married Jane Elizabeth Pike [Marriage Index: Mile End 1c 495, 1893 (March)]. She was born in the Old Ford district of Poplar in 1870 [Birth Index: Poplar 1c 607, 1870 (Dec)]. The 1901 Census finds them living with four children at 46, Walden Street in Mile End Old Town where he was occupied as a carman. One of these children was Richard William (1) Hogger, born in 1895 [Birth Index: Mile End 1c 473, 1895 (Sept)]. This son was killed in action in Germany at age "23" on May 5th 1918. He had been serving in the Machine Gun Corps of the 40th Infantry Batallion and was buried at the Berlin South-Western Cemetery near Stahnsdorf as detailed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission page. The 1881 Census finds Alfred (4) at age "13" living in the household of his married sister Caroline (1). The 1891 Census finds him at age "20" still living with her and occupied as a carman. In 1895 he married a widow Susannah (nee Hayward) Mullinger [Marriage Index: Mile End 1c 443, 1895 (March)]. She was born in 1871 [Birth Index: St. George East 1c 370, 1871 (June)]. In 1890 she had married George Richard Mullinger [Marriage Index: Bethnal Green 1c 434, 1890 (Sept)]. George was born in 1869 [Birth Index: Pancras 1b 110, 1869 (Dec)] and died aged "25" in 1893 [Death Index: Whitechapel 1c 284, 1893 (Dec)]. The 1901 Census finds Alfred (4) and Susannah living with five children at 10, Duren Place, St. George East where he was occupied as a carman and she as a rope maker. Duren Place no longer exists as such but was off or near Christian Street which is contiguous with Settles Street.

Alice Louisa (2) died aged "2" in 1872 [Death Index: Hackney 1b 239, 1872 (Dec) - indexed under "Hoggar"].

The 1881 Census finds Mary Ann (5) at age "8" living in the household of her married sister Caroline (1). The 1891 Census finds her at age "18" living with the family of Caroline (1) and occupied as a dressmaker. The 1901 Census finds her still unmarried at age "27", again living with Caroline (1) and occupied as a general domestic help.
