Bartholomew (4) Hogger was born around 1830 to parents Bartholomew (2) Hogger and his wife Ann. He was christened on October 5th 1830 at Grundisburgh [IGI: Batch C013402]. Census returns consistently spell his surname as "Hoggar".
The 1841 Census finds him at age "11" living with his parents in Grundisburgh.
The 1851 Census finds him living at Hord House, Grundisburgh in the household of a farmer George Ablitt where he was occupied as an agricultural servant.
The 1861 Census finds him living with his father in Grundisburgh where he was occupied as an agricultural labourer.
The 1871 Census finds him again living with his father in Grundisburgh where he was occupied as a groom and gardener.
In 1872 he married Ann Jane Newman [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 4a 973, 1872 (June)]. She was born in Croydon, Cambridgeshire around 1831-32.
The 1881 Census finds them living in Grundisburgh where Bartholomew (4) was occupied as a gardener. Also present was a child Ethel (2) "Hoggar" aged "5" described as his daughter. Given Ann Jane's age it seems unlikely that she would have borne a child in 1876. Perhaps Ethel (2) was Bartholomew (4)'s daughter by some other partner of his, or perhaps she was a child of some other persons and had been informally adopted by him.
The 1891 Census finds them living in The Street, Grundisburgh where Bartholomew (4) was again occupied as a gardener and Ethel (2) as a dressmaker's apprentice aged "15".
The 1901 Census finds them living at 5, Eagle Crescent in Great Clacton, Essex where Bartholomew (4) was again occupied as a gardener.
The 1911 Census finds them living at Warwick House, Colne Road in Great Clacton, Bartholomew (4) being described as a retired gardener. Their census form states that no children had been born from their marriage.
He died in Clacton in 1912 aged "83" and was buried on August 19th at St. James in Little Clacton; the burial register curiously assigns to him the forenames "William Bartholomew", whilst his GRO entry [Death Index: Tendring 4a 596, 1912 (Sept)] names him as "William B. Hogger".
The 1901 Census finds Ethel (2) at age "25" boarding in the household of a grocer and draper Walter Wright in Plough Road, Great Bentley in Essex where she was occupied as a cashier and book keeper.
